General Information
Pursuant to the Decree of the Government of 29.12.1994 and the Decree of the Minister of the Environment of 29.05.1995, the Estonian Radiation Protection Centre (ERPC) was established on 1st January 1996. Since 1st February 2009 in the course of reorganization, the Estonian Radiation Protection Centre was merged with the Environmental Board as a Radiation Safety Department.
Main responsibilities of the Radiation Safety Department:
- participate in the relevant policies, plans and programs in drafting and implementing policies;
- to carry out the administrative procedures according to the power of attorney;
- to prepare radiation safety assessments for planned and existing radiation practice;
- advise the persons exercising supervision (Environmental Inspectorate)
- maintenance of the State Dose Register of Exposed Workers, Registry of Radioactive Sources, Registry of Nuclear Material, Registry of Radioactive Waste and Registry of Radiation Practice Licences;
- organize monitoring of the natural radiation and analyse the results;
- to carry out laboratory analysis related to the radiation;
- to carry out studies related to the natural radioactivity;
- estimate effective and equivalent doses incurred by members of the public and reference groups of the population;
- provide services to ensure radiation safety;
- consulting role during radiological emergency situations
